Carpal Tunnel

What is carpel tunnel syndrome?

In the common condition of carpal tunnel syndrome, the wrists, hand and sometimes complete upper extremity gets affected. It is most common in pregnancy and occurs because of the swelling caused by fluid retention. The tunnel, which is like a narrow canal, is located at the palm base and is defined by the wrist bones and overlying transverse carpal ligament. Some tendons and the median control the sensation and movement of the hand. Also, this provides muscle strength at the bottom of the thumb. A part of the outer edges of the pam, little finger and the ring finger remain unaffected because the median nerve does not pass through these parts.

If you are suffering from numbness, pain in hand and weakness then consult the doctor. We are COSMECTO associated with several renowned surgeons and doctors in Delhi who have expertise in treating this condition. We can schedule an appointment for patients who are suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome so that they can get the most effective treatment.

How is CTS diagnosed?

It needs appropriate diagnosis:

To confirm the CTS with the hands and wrists of a patient, Electrodiagnostic studies that are EMG and nerve condition are performed.

  • Also, complete clinical examination is done. A doctor might ask the patient to perform some tasks with his or her hands. This is done to determine this condition.
  • Complete medical history of the patient is taken into consideration.
  • In order to confirm the diagnosis of CTS within the wrist and hands of the patient, Electrodiagnostic studies (nerve conduction and EMG) are done.
  • As far carpal tunnel syndrome treatment goes, it depends on the severity of the condition. It can be treated without surgery; however that varies from one patient to another. You might be suggested:

  • Occupational therapy for loosening the tendons in the hands and the wrists
  • Ensure proper rest is given to the hands and wrists for a long period in a day
  • Daily intake of NSAIDs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other prescribed pain relievers for reducing pain and inflammation.
  • You can also wear splints that might help in easy movement of the wrist
  • Surgery is the last resort and is done only when medicines, splints and therapies fail to show any kind of improvement in the patient’s condition. It is performed under local anesthesia and the wrist or hand of the patient is completely numb. Open surgery and key hole are the two types of the procedures to treat this condition.

    Keyhole Surgery

During this surgical procedure, the surgeon makes a cut of 2cm in the palm of the patient’s hand. Then an endoscope is placed through this cut for viewing the pictures on the video screen or for viewing the wrist. This particular endoscope is attached with an especially designed ligament that helps in the cutting of the ligament. The incision made is stitched using dissolvable stitches. The entire procedure lasts for nearly twenty to thirty minutes.

    Open surgery

During this surgery, the surgeon makes a single 5cm cut in the front of the wrist at the palm’s bottom. Then he opens the carpal tunnel and the ligament is cut to relieve the pressure on the nerve.

Irrespective of the type of carpal tunnel syndrome you would be recommended, the surgeon would explain the anatomy of CTS so that a patient knows what exactly it is. And, if diagnosed is done timely then the treatment is done without surgery.

When it comes to the cost involving carpal tunnel treatment, it varies from the type of treatment, either non-invasive or surgery, and patient to patient. Surgeons who are associated with us charge nominal fee so that a patient can get rid of this condition timely.
